Nathaniel "sweetwater" Clifton was born October 13, 1922 in Little Rock, Arkansas. As Clifton was growing up his family moved to Chicago. While he was living in Chicago he was a basketball star at DuSable High School. After graduating from DuSable high in 1942, he attended Xavier University for a short period of time and then was drafted into the war. He served in World War II for three years. In 1948 Clifton played with the Harlem Globtrotters. By 1950 he signed with the New York Knicks. He played in the NBA for eight years with the New York Knicks and the Detroit Pistons. In 1947 he played on the NBA All-Star team. He was the oldest first time All-Star. Clifton retired with the Detroit Pistons. He died August 31, 1990. He was the one who broke the color barrier for basketball.
